Red Diesel
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture only - don't even think of unloading pallets of bricks with your forklift for your new house. You would be breaking the law from the minute you left your yard to go there.
  • Low loader work - anything transported ona tractor drawn low loader must be used for an agricultural operation. So you can't take your digger to a building site.
  • Lugging Potatoes etc-Never use the word "haulage"! You are helping the farmer bring the harvest in. Even taking delivering fertilizer from store to field is helping the farmer plant his crop, not delivering fertilizer.
  • Lugging from store to processor- not agriculture
  • Distance-There is no distance limitation on the use of Red Diesel, however your tax disc limits you to 15 miles from the edge of your land.
  • Snow Clearing- this is allowable on public roads but not on private property such as supermarket car parks.
  • Hedge and verge cutting- therei is an exenption for this which includes travelling to and from the job
  • Occasional white diesel usage-all traces of red diesel must be removed. If you're working out of agriculture, best dedicate a tractor to white.
  • Fines-Curently £250 if you are caught and also charged back-tax for 3 years for all other identifiable offences, This can easily mount up to several thousand pounds.
